TikTok has over a billion users. That’s a massive potential audience.

However, a large user base means there’s a lot of competition for people’s attention. Your content has to stand out if you want someone to watch it. Here’s how to get more views on TikTok.

What Counts as a View on TikTok?

Before learning how to get more views, it’s important to ask: How do TikTok views work?

As soon as your video plays, TikTok counts a view. When your video auto plays or loops, or when someone watches it more than once, each play is a new view — even if it only plays for a second or two. The only thing that doesn’t count is when you watch your own video.

Here’s why views matter:

  • Algorithm boost — When a video has lots of views, TikTok notices and assumes it’s a high-quality video that more people want to see, so the algorithm boosts it to a wider audience.
  • Wider reach — Reaching a wider audience means more potential engagement with your content, leading to more likes, shares, or follows.
  • Creator Fund — To be eligible for the Creator Fund, you need at least 10,000 followers and to have earned 100,000 views in the last 30 days. More views help you meet this minimum requirement and earn more money. On top of that, TikTok’s Creator Fund pays you based on how many views you have. The higher your numbers, the higher your income.
  • Brand deals and sponsorships — The more views you have, the more people you’re reaching — and that means brands are more likely to work with you.

How Much Does TikTok Pay for Views?

There’s no concrete number TikTok pays out for views. Some say the Creator Fund paid around $0.02–$0.04 for every 1,000 views, which is $20–$40 for a million views. However, the Creativity Program — which replaced the Creator Fund for US-based creators — reportedly pays more.

Earnings vary significantly because the payout structure and amount in the Creativity Program pool fluctuate, presumably due to ever-changing ad revenue. However, no matter what the exact numbers are, the premise is the same: the more views you get, the more money you’ll make. Just remember that to be eligible, your videos have to be over one minute, and your account should have at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days.

3 Reasons Why You’re Not Getting TikTok Views

If you aren’t getting as many views as you’d like, here are a few possible causes:

  1. New account — A newer account has fewer posts, followers, and interactions, which means there isn’t enough activity for TikTok's algorithm to understand your content. It takes time for TikTok to assess your videos and show them to more people. If your account is only a few days or weeks old, be patient. Your views might start to climb later when you have more active posts.
  2. TikTok shadowban — Posting content that violates TikTok’s community guidelines or terms of service, such as hate speech, harassment, and inappropriate behavior, may get your account shadowbanned. That means TikTok doesn’t show people your videos, leading to fewer TikTok views. To get your view count back up, you’ll have to delete any videos that violate the guidelines and wait a few days for the algorithm to notice.
  3. Content quality — If your content is low quality or hard to understand, viewers might scroll away quickly, which tells the algorithm they didn’t find it worth watching. With that information, TikTok won’t show your content to as many people — leading to fewer views. Make sure your videos are clear and get to the point fast so people stay and watch to the end.

How To Get More Views on TikTok Videos: 4 Tips

While there’s no 100% effective way to increase your view count, there are a few ways to improve your chances of getting a boost from the algorithm. Here are some practical TikTok strategies for more views and engagement:

1. Embrace Hashtags

Hashtags are labels — starting with a # — that help TikTok’s algorithm understand what your post is about. This means TikTok can show it to viewers interested in those topics. If you hashtag a video with #crispytofurecipe, TikTok will know to boost it to people who frequently watch and engage with tofu recipe videos.

Hashtags also improve your searchability. When someone searches “#crispytofurecipe,” your video will appear because it has that hashtag, bringing you more views. The more hashtags you have, the better the chance people will find your content. Just don’t go overboard, or the description could be overwhelming to readers. Try to use 3–5 relevant options along with some general tags like #foryoupage or #trending to appeal to a wider audience.

Here are two ways to find relevant and trending hashtags to use:

  1. Explore — Visit TikTok's Explore page by tapping the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the screen. Browse the videos, take note of popular hashtags, and include ones that are relevant to your content.
  2. Discover and Search — From your home feed, tap the magnifying glass at the top right of your screen. In the search field, type any keywords describing your content into the search. Tap the “Hashtags” tab to see which ones are getting the most views.

2. Jump on Trending Effects and Songs

TikTok has thousands of effects and sounds, but there are usually a few trending at a given time — meaning lots of people are using and engaging with them. These could include anything from a filter that chooses which Mean Girls character you are to a song from a popular TV show.

TikTok wants to engage users in the community, and trends help do that by generating excitement and activity — so TikTok promotes trends in the algorithm. Participating in trends increases your chances of appearing on people’s For You Pages (FYPs) and getting more views.

The app makes it easy to find trending effects. Just go to TikTok’s camera, tap “Effects” at the bottom left of your screen, and you’ll see a tab with popular effects. Find one that suits your content, then record and post your video. You can also bookmark filters you see to use later — just tap on the filter, then tap the bookmark icon at the top of the screen.

You can find trending songs by watching videos on your FYP and taking note of what’s popular. If you hear a song you want to use, you can save it to your Favorites.

Here’s how to save a song to your Favorites:

  1. Go to the video with the song you want to use.
  2. Tap the record icon at the bottom right. This takes you to the sound page.
  3. Tap “Add to Favorites” to save the audio.
  4. Tap the plus button at the bottom of the screen to open the camera view.
  5. Tap “Add sound” at the top.
  6. Tap “Favorites” beneath the ad banner.
  7. Add the song and record your video.

3. Duet With Other Creators

With the Duet feature, your video appears beside another creator’s video. Viewers will see both at the same time. Duets are great for reaction videos, collaborations, or literal singing duets. When you Duet with popular or trending videos, TikTok’s algorithm might notice the buzz around them and hopefully boost your content to more people.

All you have to do is find a video you want to use, tap the “Share” button, and select “Duet.” You’ll record a video that appears on the left side of the screen, and the original creator will appear on the right side. Note that creators can turn this feature off, so you won’t always be able to record these videos.

Say you share vocal coaching advice with your TikTok audience. You could film a reaction to a viral video of someone singing on one side of the screen and your commentary on the other. You’ll add something new to a video that’s already popular and hopefully appeal to that video’s audience as well as your own, increasing your views and engagement.

4. Create High-Quality Content

If you want people to watch your videos all the way through, they must understand what you have to say — and for that to happen, your content has to be clear. Try to make sure your videos have crisp audio, good lighting, and a story or message that makes sense.

Before uploading a video to TikTok, make sure it has the right dimensions and specs. TikTok recommends a 1080 by 1920 pixel resolution and 9:16 aspect ratio since this is the best size for most devices. Otherwise, TikTok might crop your video or make it blurry during uploading.

While filming, check both your lighting and audio for maximum clarity. Use a ring light or stand in front of a window, and invest in an external microphone if possible, especially if you’re doing voiceovers. If you’re filming several videos at once, do a quick test to make sure everything looks good to avoid potential reshoots later.

For the highest possible video quality, use an external editing tool like Captions. You’ll be able to fine-tune your content before posting — and do it fast. Remove background noise, adjust your video’s size to fit TikTok’s aspect ratio, and trim out any awkward pauses that occurred during filming in minutes.
